The Centre for China Studies (CCS) at The Chinese University of Hong Kong is a department-level unit that offers English-taught undergraduate and postgraduate programmes (including MA, MPhil and PhD) and commits to the highest international quality of interdisciplinary teaching and research on modern and contemporary China. The Centre is inviting applications for two (2) Research Assistant positions to provide research support to two separate GRF-funded projects.

Applicants should be eligible to work in Hong Kong and possess a Bachelor’s degree in any Arts/Humanities discipline, preferably with a Master’s degree in Film, Anthropology, History, Sociology, Cultural Studies, and/or Chinese Studies. Additionally, they should demonstrate an excellent command of written and spoken English and Chinese, as well as proficiency in computer skills. Both positions offer a competitive salary to candidates with outstanding research experience. Appointments are expected to commence as soon as possible, no later than February 2024. The review process will be conducted on a rolling basis until the positions are filled.

A) One Research Assistant will be involved in research activities related to the history of Hong Kong crime films, film criticism, and film censorship. He/she will be responsible for collecting, organizing, and analyzing research materials at local archives and library collections, as well as online; reviewing relevant academic literature; assisting with the coordination of academic events; facilitating interviews and transcribing them; and other tasks as assigned. This is a flexible, part-time position: the ideal candidate will work two days a week on the project for at least one year (12 months).

B) One Research Assistant will be employed for an anthropological project focusing on Second World War commemoration in contemporary China, memory activism, veteran studies, and the role of civil society/NGOs in shaping war memories. Her/his responsibilities will include collecting, organizing, transcribing, and analyzing ethnographic fieldwork data, facilitating in-depth interviews and focus groups, assisting in manuscript preparation for publication, coordinating academic workshops and events, as well as undertaking departmental administrative tasks and other assigned duties. For this position, an ideal arrangement would be a full-time contract for one year (12 months). However, part-time options will also be considered.
