Course Description
In this course, students will go on a six-day trip to Taiwan (Taipei and Taichung) to learn about how social innovation is being implemented in a Chinese social context. During the trip, students will meet with scholars and practitioners of social innovation and visit various related organizations and projects in Taiwan. In the process, they will learn about the development of social innovation in the setting of a Chinese society (in contrast to a Western society). In particular, site visit will be conducted to learn about the impact of social innovation in the following three fields: housing and community development, elderly care/”empty nesters” in an urban setting and the urban food waste/leftover food issues. Preparation for this trip will start in the first term: students will read a selection of articles on social innovation as a problem-solving perspective, and materials on the three mentioned social issues in Taiwan.
