Course Description
Chinese culture in Taiwan is a reflection of its diverse past. Home to still thriving indigenous cultures, the island over the past five hundred years has been a haven for Fujianese and Hakka settlers on the Chinese frontier, a stronghold for Japanese pirates, a colonial possession of the Spanish and Dutch, a court-in-exile for the Ming house, a prefecture and province of Fujian under the Qing, and a colony of Japan before being returned to China at the end of World War Two. The island then became a refuge for the Guomindang at the end of the Chinese Civil War, a locus of Cold-War tension, a thriving cultural hub, and an economic and high-tech powerhouse. Chinese culture on Taiwan is a combination of all of these things. This 3-unit guided fieldwork course will introduce you to the “Beautiful Island” and the many manifestations of its cultural diversity.
