What is life like for a national hero? Explore the intricate web of experiences that define their existence. How do ordinary people select, imagine, and craft their own national heroes through commemorative rituals and charitable volunteering? In what ways does nationalism intertwine with masculinity in the construction of heroes in contemporary China? Join Professor Jacqueline Zhenru Lin in an intellectually stimulating discussion covering these and other thought-provoking topics from her latest book. Through a feminist lens, this ethnography delves into the cross-cultural significance of exemplary men in shaping masculinities.

𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐫:
Dr. Jacqueline Zhenru Lin is a Research Assistant Professor in the Centre for China Studies at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Her research interests include the use of digital technology in Chinese NGOs, gendered nationalism, war memories, and local histories.

𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫:
Prof. Sea Ling Cheng is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Her research is focused on sexuality with reference to sex work, human trafficking, women’s activism, and policymaking.
