This internship course makes it possible for students to “learn through doing” and “learn through social experience” in a faculty-guided and assessed internship based in Hong Kong, mainland China or Taiwan. The internship in an organization, institution, company or enterprise will allow students to learn how to make the language, cultural, social and economics-based knowledge and analytical, critical thinking and presentation skills of their studies relevant to a wide range of “real world” fields outside of the university. Full-time summer internships should last at least six weeks to qualify for this course, while part-time internships throughout the year should last at least twelve weeks.

Students are expected to apply to take this course before or in the early stages of their internship. They should find an appropriate supervisor among Centre for China Studies faculty and present to this intended supervisor an internship-related research plan and outline of one-two pages. Admission to this course will depend on the internship and research plan being relevant to Chinese Studies, and on the availability of a suitable supervisor. Students will be expected to provide regular progress reports to their supervisor, and will submit a final paper on a topic that connects the internship to a broader topic related to Chinese society, economy, or culture.

Course meetings and readings will be arranged in consultation with the instructor.
