This course will offer students an in-depth experience with the civil society and social work of Hong Kong which has been known as Asia’s world city. How does its confluence of Chinese and Western cultures shape social work and the meaning of being local in the city? How do local communities tackle crises and issues that have been occurring to this city, such as the Covid Pandemic and climate change? Through ethnographic fieldwork, the class explores the interaction of different cultural flows in various social systems and learns about the linkage between the local and the global, and the Chinese and the rest.

This immersion course is designed to provide undergraduate students hands-on experience with different methodologies of ethnographic fieldwork, including participant observation, taking fieldnotes, taking photographs, and considering the ethical implications of fieldwork. Students will have intensive fieldwork in social work organizations that serve one local community on one particular social issue.
